Linux 6.1 will have even more features than Linux 6.0

According to Linus Torvalds, there will be a stable release of Linux 6.0. He said that he wanted the release of Linux 6.0 boring.

Linux 6.0 does bring in performance improvements in the processor and Thread ripper.  Linux 6.0 provides hardware support as well as RISC-V support. According to Linus, there have been 15k non-merge commits for 6.0 Linux. This release is not just an ordinary release itself.

Linus announced the addition of Rust programming language in the Linus kernel. This will allow developers to build other components and drivers instead of using C programming language by default. There will be core new things in Linux 6.1, but Linux 6.0 is not lesser than before the version.

Kees Cook and Miguel Ojeda, developers for Linux 6.0, submitted a request to Linus to bring in Rust programming in Linux 6.1. Kees requested to pull “Rust introduction” whose content will have the absolute minimum to have Rust code building in the kernel. There are many other drivers which are at work as per Kees.

There are four categories for the initial support that includes kernel internals, Rust crates binding and packages, K builds, Rust kernel sample, and documentation. Linus has mentioned that there will not only change in new core features like the C language but also there will be changes in Rust in Linux 6.1 which will attract new developers.

According to Linus, rust will bring in new faces as we are getting old and gray, so we needed something new. Rust will have core infrastructure that will help in putting up a new face to Linux 6.1.
